Anorexia nervosa was first diagnosed by Englishman sir William Gull (who also invented the term anorexia nervosa) in the 19th century. He described the disease as a peculiar form of disease occurring mostly in young women, and characterised by extreme emaciation (which holds quite true when compared to our modern knowledge of anorexia). Gull published a seminal work concerning the disease, “Anorexia Nervosa (Apepsia Hysterica, Anorexia Hysterica)" in 1987. In his papers he described three different cases: Miss A, Miss B and an unknown person. Later in life he also wrote about Miss K's case.

Miss A was a 17-year-old girl who weighted 37,2 kg and was 165 cm. She had dramatically lost around 15 kgs and was greatly emaciated. Gull treated her and she recovered. These are the notes Gull made from his patient's looks: "It will be noticeable that as she recovered she had a much younger look, corresponding indeed to her age, twenty-one; whilst the photographs, taken when she was seventeen, give her the appearance of being nearer thirty." Miss B was 18 years old and had the same symptoms as miss A. Her weight wasn't told. But she also recovered in Gull's treatment. Miss K was a young girl, only 14 years old. Her family brought her to Gull when she started refusing to eat anything else besides coffee or tea. She weighted 28,6 kg and was 163 cm tall. She also recovered.

This is not a new disease but it is spreading among young girls like a plague. Most people blame the media about what's happened. I don't know if media is the only one to be blamed, just a couple of days ago I saw a 6 year-old-girl trying on clothes and doing nails with her mother. My mother often complains about her weight, why can't I then think about my weight? My friend's parents tell their kid to eat well then why do they only eat diet food?
